THE FOOD PYRAMID: A GUIDE TO A HEALTHY AND BALANCED DIET
We all have to eat healthy food in order to feel good and have energy. The food pyramid is designed as a guide to help people follow a healthy and balanced diet. To have a healthy diet, you must have the right amount of nutrients in the food that you eat. These nutrients include carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.
The pyramid is split into different food groups. At the bottom of the pyramid is the biggest section. This contains fruit and vegetables, the food that you should eat most of. People should eat between 5 and 7 servings of vegetables, salads and fruit everyday. Next is the wholemeal cereals and breads, potatoes pasta and rice. You should have one serving of these at every meal. Next is the dairy products. You should have 3 servings a day of milk, yogurt or cheese.
Meat, fish, eggs, beans and nuts are next. You shouldn’t eat more than 2 servings of these per day. Then there are the fats and oil, for example butter and mayonnaise. You mustn’t eat too much of these foods as they are high in fat. Finally at the top there are the foods high in sugar, fat and salt, such as cola, crisps or cakes. You don’t have to include this type of food in your diet. It is better not to eat too much food at all.
These days people are eating to much food from the top of the pyramid. This type of ‘junk food’ does not include the vitamins that your body needs. Most people enjoy a treat every now and again but we should limit this to once or twice a week.
